“The Wisdom from Above”
I am looking forward to District Conference on October 7-8, 2011. Friday evening will be a time of celebration with a choir made up of singers from many churches throughout the district, much congregational singing, a litany of celebration thanking God for the good that is happening in the district, and a sermon exploring the theme “The Wisdom from Above.”
The text upon which the theme is based is James 3:13-18—Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace–loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. (New International Version)
On Saturday, we will welcome two new fellowships and a new congregation, hear reports, affirm leaders, adopt a ministry investment plan, consider an update to the District by-laws, and consider a query on Military Chaplaincy.
It is my hope and expectation that in worship, business, and fellowship, we will allow the Holy Spirit to guide us. We will demonstrate the characteristics of people living under the influence of the wisdom that comes from above. Let us strive to be kind to each other as will clarify and affirm the values we hold as disciples of Jesus Christ.
I urge you to pray for everyone who will participate in District Conference: the officers, District Board members, District staff, delegates, and all interested persons.
